Struggles and wins: Reflections on Q1 and Preparing for Q2
“Not how long, but how well you have lived is the main thing.” ~ Seneca.
I recently came across a quote that went something like: "I am currently building a game I want to play forever" (the game being life). If you've been following me, you know I've touched on the concept of finite and infinite games. Finite games are played for the sake of ending them, but infinite games are played simply for the sake of playing. It is a game design concept, but it can also be used as a metaphor for life - creating a life you don't need to escape from.
When I started my company, I had the mindset of "I'll do this, and one day things will turn around or change." But I've learned that's not a sustainable way to live. My goal is to live the life that I choose, not just hope to achieve it one day. It took me a while to get here, and I still struggle with it sometimes.
The first quarter of 2023 is over, and I'm proud of all that I've achieved. However, I often find it hard to enjoy and celebrate the present moment, always looking for the next big thing. When you're working on something big, it's easy to miss the small moments that add up to the big picture. During my quarterly review, I found myself focusing more on what I didn't achieve than what I did. I share this because I want you to know that everyone struggles sometimes, even those who seem to have it all together.
The media often focuses on fear-mongering market data or global problems, and it can make you feel like you're the only one struggling. But you're not alone. To feel better, try redirecting your focus to your occasional wins or engage in deliberate activities that shift your focus from despair.
My favourite ways to redirect my focus include meditation, journaling, reading, and working out. They may seem cliché, but they help me recharge during tough times.
In the second quarter, my focus will be on connection, thought-provoking pieces, being braver in my creativity, and creating more connections. I want to be more present in my daily life with my team, friends, and family.
I'd love to hear about your plans for the second quarter. Are you doing a quarterly review? Do you have something big coming up? Let me know.
My Favourite Things:
What I’m reading/listening to enrich my life:
Buy back your time - Dan Martell. Always looking to find ways to see how I can approach the way I spend my time. I picked out this book because one of my mentors is following his routine and has been working really great for him. Dan Martell is an entrepreneur, angel investor, thought leader, and highly sought-after coach in the SaaS, or software as a service, industry.
My latest favourite thing to enhance my life:
Using my Kindle Paperwhite more often to read has been a life-changing thing. I recently replaced my 2012 Kindle Paperwhite with the newer version, and let me tell you, it has been great. I use it a lot while commuting, when I am alone at coffee shops, or before I go to bed. It has been a great tool to keep up with my reading and also a way to relax. If you're thinking about getting one, I highly recommend it!
Movie/TV show I am watching:
I’ve been going deep into The Good Doctor's tv show. I know I am very late on the bandwagon but I’ve been really enjoying it so far. “The series follows Shaun Murphy, a young autistic surgeon with savant syndrome from the small city of Casper, Wyoming, where he had a troubled past.”
Question or quote of the week:
“How do I create an environment in which my people can work to their natural best?”
― Simon Sinek, The Infinite Game
